Here is a bit of encouragement for others who would like to be in the doll business.
There are so many times in your life when you think... if only I had done this differently. Right? It took me arriving at the age of 40 to act on those what if's, and here is where it has lead me in my life. Doing something to change your life, working towards a goal, even going out on a limb, eventually pays off if you keep at it long enough. Most women don't believe in themselves, have the drive or guts to change their lives. But I'm here as proof as to what can be done if you girls act on your dreams.
Mine is truly a Cinderella story...
I picked up polymer clay in 1999, and I made fairies, pixies and mermaids. That lead into larger dolls in porcelain, limited editions, awards and then onto working as a designer for 6 different direct marketing companies. It was a whirlwind of excitement with great royalties, home shopping, infomercials and notoriety that lasted for over 15 years. When things started to slow up I realized the importance of re-inventing yourself every 10 years. That lead me into teaching, writing and sculpting one of a kinds in polymer again on a bigger scale than before. Now the push is back into porcelain again and doing what is currently hot, as in BJD's, figurines and 1:12 doll house scale dolls. The key to being fulfilled is never rest on your accomplishments thinking it will last long. After you arrive with success with one medium, start immediately with your next big venture while marketing the first. Sounds like tons of work, but if this is your passion it will become your love and life and the days will just fly by.
Hugs, Patricia
